Learn Running

If you are new to running, the first thing you want to get is a good pair of running shoes. This is important - running puts a lot of stress on your body, and the right running shoes can prevent added stress on your feet, hips and even your lower back. Here are some tips on finding the right running shoe for you:

Your foot type & how to choose running shoes:

  1. Flat Foot/Pronated: If your foot strikes on the outside of the heel and rolls inward excessively, you are an overpronator. (Many types of overuse injuries are associated with this foot type.)

Your Shoe Type: Look for a shoe that has a straight or semi-curved shape, which will provide you with stability and maximum inner foot support. A medial post (a stiff material on the inner side of the shoe) will help reduce overpronation or rolling in. A dense, durable polyurethane midsole will provide moderate cushioning and more stability.
Shoes for stability: Men's Stability | Women's Stability

  2. High-Arched Foot/Supinated: If your foot is rigid, doesn't pronate (roll inward) enough and is not an effective shock absorber, then you are an underpronator.

Your Shoe Type: Look for a semi-curved or curved shoe shape. You are not likely to need any additional medial support. You'll want extra cushioning and a lighter weight shoe and a softer, lighter outsole for more flexibility.
Shoes with extra cushioning: Men's Cushioning | Women's Cushioning

  3. Neutral: If you land on the outside of your heel, then roll inward slightly to absorb shock, then you have a neutral foot type. (If you are of normal weight, you are considered the most biomechanically sound type of runner.)

Your Shoe Type: Look for a straight or semi-curved shoe. Although not necessary, you may want to consider a shoe with a medial post (a stiff material on the inner side of the shoe) for motion control. You'll want moderate cushioning.
All running shoes: Men's Running Shoes | Women's Running Shoes

If you enjoy the more rigorous turf of trail running, get yourself a good pair of trail running shoes that will give you added stability and control. You'll definitely be glad you have them if you encounter and need to outrun a bear. Click here >> Trail Running Shoes.

Gear Review: Running Shirts

I’ve always run in t-shirts, but after moving to a warmer climate, I decided to invest in some of those "Dri-Fit" performance running shirts that supposedly “wick away moisture” to see how well they worked. I picked up 4 shirts, Nike and Champion, all of different styles: some with sleeves, some without, some stretchy and some not. Interestingly, none had lycra, they all were 100% polyester.

Well, I figured out that I really like them; in fact, I don’t think I can go back to regular t-shirts now. I even want to wear these shirts when I'm not working out. They're so comfortable, they're addictive. But also, I noticed two other benefits I wasn’t expecting.

  • First, by wearing such cool-looking sports gear, I automatically felt like I had to "live up to" my look. I discovered that this is an interesting way to get myself to run further and push myself harder.
  • Second, they dry so fast - even after you wash them. They’re ideal for taking on the road.

If you want professional instruction, look for a group that offers an organized training program. I joined a weekly running class where I could practice drills and technique - but the main benefit was to have a professional evaluate my running technique and give me advice on what I need to improve. This made the class well worth the money I spent, since I can use the tips that I learned whenever I run - and I definitely have a lot I can improve upon.
